5 things to splurge on

by Thursday, June 29, 2023

When you become a mature person of a certain age (lol), there are things that are worth a splurge. I believe in heavy self care and I believe in longevity. Now that i’m 40+ I take my comfort, relaxation and health very seriously. Not only a few times a year when i’m celebrating but in my every day life. There are things, and experiences that you can learn to invest in to nourish your everyday life. Here a few things I don’t mind spending a little extra on.

1. Vacations

I work to live, i’m over the part of my career where I live to work. For a decade or 2 I spent my free time bettering my craft and scheming on how I could make the most effective mark on the world. I now collect my hard earned coins and dedicate an allotment for vacation. These don’t have to be expensive. Make time to see everything you want to see and to visit all the places you want to be. In the beginning of the year make a decision and fund that vacation pot with intention until the time comes. You will never regret the process of going or doing something for yourself. You will only regret all the things you didn’t do or see because you were working.

2. Mattress

I love coming home to a comfortable environment. Sleep is very important to me, it’s not just something I do because I have to. I NEED to sleep to function properly so I make it a priority. From light sleep aids like tea and lavender scents to melatonin. But above all is comfort. the most important factor is my actual mattress. I spent what I thought a good sleep was worth on a queen mattress that I can melt into and leaves me craving it even on the the most luxurious vacations. Think about the lifespan of a mattress (8-10 years) what’s it worth to sleep on clouds each night for that long?

3. Vitamins / Supplements

As we get older our bodies need more. Just like you do skin care for the outside you must find supplements to help you replenish what you are naturally losing. Tabb Tip: commit to getting your blood work done each year. This is the best way to find out what you could be lacking to improve your overall health. Your doctor can tell you if any of your levels are off (amongst many other things). Many of us are Iron and vitamin D deficient. Personally I also NEED a probiotic daily to help my digestive system along. Invest in those supplements just as you do your clothes. I have my favorite supplements set to auto replenish each month. Take them and stay consistent for better overall health. Sometime you don’t know you’re feeling bad until you start to feel better.

4. Skin Care

We’re aging (hopefully gracefully) but in any case it can’t hurt to get a little help from good habits and products that are beneficial but also preventative. We only get one skin to live in – it’s worth taking care of it! Start simple with a good moisturizer and don’t forget your SPF. If you are really concerned, see a dermatologist. This could be a once a year thing just to discuss concerns and receive product recommendations.

5. Coffee / tea / kombucha / wine / spirits

Work directly correlates to 2 things for me. Fun and relaxation. Since I cant take a vacation every day I need to keep a few of my favorite, easy releases on hand. I’m not a coffee drinker but I do enjoy a good cinnamon or chai tea on the occasion. I keep a lovely red wine on hand for weekends and a lovely bourbon when I need a little more to take the edge off. Learn your tastes and what works for you. You need to relax on purpose and you can enjoy winding down alone.
